Dhiren Das win UCMM chess title

Dhiren Das of Bhadrak came from behind to win the title in the 2nd Umesh Chandra Mishra Memorial All-Odisha Open Chess Tournament here at hotel Richi Regency today. He stunned top seed Bira Kishore Behera of Puri in the eighth and last round to finish at the top of the table with seven points.

Das took home the top prize of Rs 4,000, while overnight sole leader Bira Kishore Behera settled as runner-up with 6.5 points. Sanghamitra Singh and Bansidhar Bhoi were adjudged as the best woman and veteran players respectively.

Altogether 60 players from seven districts have joined three-day and eight-round tournament, which is being organised by Chess Association of Odisha (CAO). Chess Association of India vice-president Sabita Tripathy inaugurated the event, while actor Salil Mitra handed over the prizes at the closing function. Orissa State Chess Association vice-president Arati Bijoy Mohanty and chief arbiter Debasis Panigrahi were present on the occasions.
